I’ve seen what goes wrong

now I help my clients avoid it.

Most people find the legal system intimidating, and for good reason — it’s written to keep outsiders out. I work alongside my clients to make it approachable, one piece at a time.

Most law firms still operate like it’s 1995. We don’t.

About Derek

A guide through
the legal system.

Derek began practicing law in Missouri in 2011 after a career in telecommunications and technology. He has been practicing estate settlement and planning for the majority of his time practicing law. He also served as a Estate Settlement Officer with Bank of America where he settled estates of ultra high net worth families, with assets exceeding hundreds of millions of dollars.

Alongside the estate work, Derek built a technology law practice focused on HIPAA, data privacy, AI governance, and the contract and regulatory work that surrounds technology-driven companies. He also handles civil rights litigation under §1983, with a focus on Fourth Amendment claims against police and other government actors.

Common Questions

Before you reach out.

How does virtual practice work?+
Most matters are handled by phone, video, and secure document exchange. We use encrypted file transfer, e-signature, and secure video conferencing — the same tools the largest firms use, without the overhead. If you can use email, you can work with us. In-person meetings are available by appointment when the matter calls for it.
Do you serve clients outside St. Louis?+
Yes. The firm serves clients across all of Missouri, including rural and small-town counties that often have limited access to attorneys with this depth of work. Missouri law permits fully remote estate planning, which means the same standard of work is available regardless of where you live in the state.
What does an initial consultation cost?+
Initial consultations are free for most matters. Specialized work — M&A, complex estate planning, certain litigation matters — may carry a flat consultation fee, which is always disclosed before any meeting is scheduled. You will never be billed for a consultation you didn’t agree to in advance.
Do you offer flat fees or payment plans?+
Yes to both. Estate planning packages, business formations, contract review, and similar planning work are typically quoted as flat fees so you know the cost before engagement. For larger or open-ended matters, we discuss billing structure and any retainer requirements upfront — no surprises.
How is my information protected?+
We use encrypted document exchange, secure video conferencing, and access-controlled file storage. The firm’s technology practice gives us a working knowledge of HIPAA, data privacy, and information security that goes well beyond what most law firms practice — and that knowledge applies to how we handle your file.
Do you accept ARAG legal insurance?+
Yes. We are a participating ARAG provider. If your employer offers ARAG benefits, many of our services — particularly estate planning, document review, and consultation — may be fully or partially covered. We will verify coverage with your plan before engagement.
Are you accepting new clients?+
Yes, across all practice areas. Reach out via the contact form or call (314) 732-1547. We complete a brief intake within one business day and schedule consultations shortly thereafter.
